Come for the Huge Scale Model and Learn Stuff Too
Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center
上海城市规划展示馆
The Shanghai Urban Planing Exhibition Center (SUPEC) is one of Shanghai’s many cool museums and quite popular. Inside on the 6th floor is a scale model of the whole city which you can view from a perimeter walkway or gallery above. If you are in Shanghai then of course you’ll want to try and find your hotel or apartment.
In addition, there are many other interesting displays to enjoy including an art gallery and historical items. As this is an “urban planning” exhibit you’ll also find several displays about how Shanghai currently and will later deal with issues such as traffic, ecological impacts, new developments, etc.
There is also an area with many books that detail all the neighborhoods in Shanghai. Among them is one that lists parks and old neighborhoods that usually go unnoticed yet are quite cool to explore. One such example is XinChang Ancient Town (新场古镇) which is an old salt trading town with canals and cobblestone streets.
The exhibition center is located on People’s Square and is just three-minute walk from the metro station. Like most public buildings and museums, it is closed on Mondays and open during the day Tuesday-Sunday.
